Dutch designer Daan Roosegaarde worked with scientist Bob Ursem and European Nano Solutions to create the Smog Free Tower. After launching a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund what he describes as “the largest air-purifier in the world”, the Smog Free Tower has been installed in Rotterdam.

The Smog Free Tower creates smog free air zones allowing people to breathe and experience what clean air in a city really means. The project combines high-tech science, design and imagination.
The seven-metre-tall structure processes 30,000 cubic metres of air per hour – removing ultra-fine smog particles and pumping out clean air using no more electricity than a water boiler. The smog is sucked in through its top, then the purified air is released through vents on the four sides.

And what do they do with the smog accumulated? By compressing the filtered smog particles, they create awesome and unique jewelry. The dust removed from 1,000 cubic metres of air is compressed and sealed within a resin cube, which is used as an embellishment for a ring or a cufflink.
